Blown-In Fiberglass Over 40-Year-Old Attic Insulation

Before and after blown-in attic insulation in Palmdale CA
Before: matted R-11 fiberglass. After: fresh blown-in to R-38. Placeholder for project photo.

The homeowner’s upstairs bedrooms sat at 84 degrees every July afternoon. In the attic, the original insulation had compressed to maybe three inches, with bare patches over the master suite. We removed the failed material, air-sealed the top plates, and blew Owens Corning AttiCat to R-38 across the full attic floor. Their AC runtime dropped noticeably within the first week, and the upstairs finally held temperature after 4 p.m.

Crawl Space Encapsulation With Vapor Barrier

Crawl space encapsulation before and after in Palmdale CA
Before: exposed dirt and sagging fiberglass. After: sealed liner, taped seams, conditioned space. Placeholder for project photo.

This Palmdale home had a musty smell that climbed into the kitchen every time the AC pulled air from the crawl space. Exposed dirt, ductwork sweating, and old batt insulation falling between the joists. We installed a 12-mil vapor barrier up the foundation walls, sealed the vents, and re-insulated the rim joists with Rockwool. The odor was gone in 48 hours, and the kitchen floor stopped feeling cold on winter mornings.

Attic Air Sealing Before New Insulation

Air sealing attic penetrations before insulation Palmdale CA
Before: gaps around can lights and wiring. After: foam-sealed penetrations. Placeholder for project photo.

This was a classic case of insulation hiding the real problem. The attic had plenty of blown-in material, but the home still ran hot because every can light and electrical chase leaked conditioned air straight into the attic. We air-sealed all penetrations with foam and caulk, then topped the insulation to a consistent R-38 with CertainTeed blown-in fiberglass. The homeowner said the house finally “felt tight” for the first time in years.

Radiant Barrier Under a Hot Palmdale Roof Deck

Radiant barrier installation before and after Palmdale CA
Before: exposed roof deck absorbing heat. After: reflective barrier installed across rafters. Placeholder for project photo.

In Antelope Valley summers, attic temperatures routinely hit 140 degrees. This homeowner’s AC worked constantly, yet the house never cooled below 78. We stapled a reflective radiant barrier to the underside of the roof rafters, cutting the radiant heat load before it ever reached the attic floor insulation. Attic temperature dropped by over 30 degrees on a 105-degree day, and the AC stopped cycling every seven minutes.

Insulation Removal After Rodent Damage

Before: contaminated insulation with droppings. After: cleaned, sanitized, and re-insulated. Placeholder for project photo.

This one started with a scratching sound over the hallway. When we got into the attic, the fiberglass was packed with droppings and nesting material, compaction so bad the insulation value was effectively zero. We removed everything, sanitized the decking, rodent-proofed the entry points, and blew in fresh GreenFiber cellulose to R-38. The homeowner got a clean attic, a quieter house, and peace of mind that the critters weren’t coming back.

Wall Insulation Retrofit in a 1970s Home

Wall insulation retrofit before and after Palmdale CA
Before: empty wall cavities. After: dense-packed insulation from the exterior. Placeholder for project photo.

Older Palmdale homes built before energy codes often have nothing but empty air between the studs. This homeowner’s walls were warm to the touch in summer and cold in winter, a dead giveaway. We dense-packed the cavities with blown-in insulation from the exterior, patching the small drill holes to match the stucco. The result was immediate: quieter rooms, lower heating bills in the winter, and a house that finally held its temperature.
