• CertainTeed OPTIMA blow-in fiberglass settles and slumps. In walls, we see this more in older drill-and-fill jobs where the installer didn’t pack the cavity dense enough. We fix it by pulling the old fill, checking the cavity, and reinstalling CertainTeed OPTIMA at the correct density with a verified blow test.
• CertainTeed SmartBatt (now part of the Sustainable Insulation line) loses its compression fit. SmartBatt is cut slightly oversized to friction-fit between studs, but Palmdale’s dry heat can cause the kraft facing to curl and the batt to slip, especially in west-facing walls that bake all afternoon. We can’t just caulk it; we remove the affected sections and respray or convert to a closed-cell product where the wall allows.
• Kraft-facing vapor retarder installed backward on CertainTeed batts. This happens more than it should, even in newer Palmdale construction. The facing goes toward the conditioned side. When it’s backward, moisture gets trapped in the cavity and you get mold behind the drywall. We fix it by removing the drywall section, flipping or replacing the batt, and verifying with a moisture meter before we close the wall.
• CertainTeed DryRight fiberglass batts in exterior walls lose their moisture resistance. DryRight is meant for humid climates, but we find it in Palmdale homes where a contractor used whatever was on the truck. Under our desert sun, the facing can degrade and the batt gets brittle.
